What exactly is ductile cast iron? In fact, it’s produced by a spheroidizing process that yields spherical graphite, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties, ductility, and toughness of cast iron—resulting in strength even higher than that of carbon steel.

Cast iron is an iron-carbon alloy produced by melting and casting industrial pig iron, scrap steel, and other ferrous materials and their alloys at high temperatures. When the precipitated graphite appears in a flaky, strip-like form, the resulting cast iron is known as gray cast iron; if the graphite takes on a worm-like morphology, it’s called vermicular graphite cast iron; and when the graphite forms spherical shapes, the cast iron is referred to as ductile iron.
As industry continues to evolve, ductile iron has already played a significant role in many industrial sectors—areas that demand exceptionally high levels of strength, ductility, toughness, wear resistance, and resilience against severe thermal and mechanical shocks, as well as resistance to both high and low temperatures, corrosion, and dimensional stability. To meet these diverse application requirements, ductile iron offers a remarkably broad spectrum of mechanical and physical properties.
Other important properties of ductile iron include yield strength, elastic modulus, wear resistance, fatigue strength, hardness, and impact performance. Additionally, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and electromagnetic properties are also critical considerations for designers. Pearlite-type ductile iron, with its medium-to-high strength, moderate toughness, and excellent plasticity—resulting in superior overall performance—is particularly noted for its outstanding wear resistance, vibration damping capabilities, and favorable casting processability. Moreover, it can have its properties further tailored through various heat treatments. This type of ductile iron is widely used in manufacturing key components for power machinery, such as crankshafts, camshafts, connecting shafts, connecting rods, gears, clutch plates, hydraulic cylinder bodies, and other vital parts.
That's all the information about ductile iron—let's hope that, in the near future, its unique characteristics will lead to an even wider range of applications!
