 Small and Medium-Sized Castings

1. What is a casting?

Castings are metal-shaped objects produced using various casting methods—specifically, molten metal that has been refined is poured, injected under pressure, drawn in, or otherwise introduced into a pre-prepared mold. After cooling, these castings undergo further processing steps such as grinding, ultimately yielding objects with specific shapes, dimensions, and desired properties.

II. Casting Process for Small and Medium-Sized Castings

In the casting process of machine tool bed castings, the principle of high-temperature tapping and low-temperature pouring should be followed. Raising the tapping temperature of the molten metal helps melt inclusions, promote slag flotation, facilitate slag removal and degassing, thereby reducing defects like slag entrapment and gas porosity in the machine tool castings. Conversely, using a lower pouring temperature can effectively reduce gas solubility in the molten metal, minimize liquid shrinkage, and lessen the baking effect of high-temperature metal on the mold cavity surface, thus preventing defects such as gas porosity, sand sticking, and shrinkage cavities. Therefore, while ensuring complete filling of the mold cavity, it is advisable to adopt the lowest possible pouring temperature. The process of pouring molten metal from the ladle into the mold is known as "pouring." Improper pouring techniques can lead to defects in machine tool castings, including insufficient filling, cold shuts, gas porosity, shrinkage cavities, and slag entrapment, and may even pose safety risks to personnel.

III. Development Prospects for Small and Medium-Sized Castings

China is a major global producer of castings, yet the country currently faces a severe overcapacity in casting production—though this overcapacity primarily affects low-end casting products. Meanwhile, China’s production of mid-to-high-end castings struggles to meet market demand. Therefore, the Chinese casting industry must focus on shifting its emphasis from low-end to more advanced casting capabilities, thereby driving sustainable growth and enhancing the overall competitiveness of the domestic casting sector.

In recent years, the growing demand—both domestically and internationally—has surged steadily, making China's casting industry, particularly stainless steel hardware castings, increasingly popular. Industry experts have identified two key reasons: First, as China's economic standing continues to rise and its casting sector keeps expanding, more and more hardware casting products are being exported to other countries, directly boosting production volumes at Chinese casting manufacturers in response to rising overseas demand. Second, "quality wins the world"—the continuous improvement in the quality of domestic hardware casting products has also become a major driver behind the increasing market demand. As a result, China's hardware casting industry is now thriving.

Energy conservation and emission reduction will become the focal point of China's policy-making regarding casting production capacity. To tackle global warming and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, the nation is placing great emphasis on improving energy efficiency across industrial sectors and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Enhancing energy efficiency, however, also means phasing out or upgrading outdated, high-energy-consuming, and high-emission production capacities. China's casting industry as a whole remains energy-intensive and environmentally polluting, making it a key area under close national scrutiny for energy-saving and emission-reduction efforts. Experts predict that, moving forward, the government will adopt a combination of mandatory measures and incentives to effectively address energy conservation and emission reduction in the casting sector. Such policy initiatives may include regulatory controls and standards, fiscal policies, voluntary agreements, and targeted goals. In short, energy conservation and emission reduction will remain the central focus of China's strategy for managing casting production capacity.

Through the introduction above, do friends now have a preliminary understanding of the concept of small- and medium-sized castings? I’m sure you’re all quite clear about it by now. Today, thanks to the development brought about by reform and opening up, China has become a major manufacturing powerhouse, with annual export transactions of products amounting to an enormous figure. So, if you’re interested in this topic, don’t miss out—this is definitely worth your attention!
