More than 60 years have passed since ductile iron was discovered. Thanks to its excellent comprehensive performance, ease of manufacturing, and low cost, it not only serves as a superior replacement for gray cast iron, enhancing the quality of cast iron materials, but also can substitute for cast steel, forged steel, and welded components—thereby significantly reducing production expenses. According to statistics, among the total output of ductile iron, 40% is used to replace forged steel parts, stamped components, and welded assemblies; 25% replaces malleable cast iron products; 20% takes the place of gray iron parts; and 15% substitutes for cast steel components. Internationally, the proportion of ductile iron in total castings, as well as the ratio of ductile iron to cast steel, is widely regarded as a key indicator for measuring a nation’s level of industrialization.
Since ductile iron was discovered, there have been It's been over 60 years. Thanks to its excellent overall performance, ease of manufacturing, and low cost, ductile iron not only serves as a reliable substitute for gray cast iron, improving the quality of cast iron materials, but also can replace cast steel, forged steel, and welded components, significantly reducing production costs. According to statistics, among the total output of ductile iron, 40% is used to replace forged steel parts, stamped components, and welded assemblies; 25% replaces malleable cast iron products; 20% takes the place of gray iron parts; and 15% substitutes for cast steel components. Internationally, the proportion of ductile iron in total castings and the ratio of ductile iron to cast steel are regarded as crucial indicators for measuring a country's level of industrialization.

Industrialized developed countries have been able to ensure the quality of ductile iron due to the high quality and consistent raw and auxiliary materials used in its production, advanced process equipment, and sophisticated testing technologies. As a result, ductile iron has long been employed in critical components for automobiles, rail transit systems, wind power, nuclear power, and other key industries—replacing both forged steel and cast steel parts. From 1964 to 1965, an American company replaced the conventional steering knuckle—originally assembled from 13 forged and stamped components—with a ductile iron integral steering knuckle. This marked a significant breakthrough in the application of ductile iron components for critical safety parts in automotive chassis, paving the way for faster advancements in ductile iron technology thereafter.
In recent years, China's heating industry has experienced robust growth, with a continuous stream of new technologies, equipment, and materials emerging. These advancements have played a crucial role in elevating the overall technical level, heating quality, safety, and economic efficiency of the centralized heating sector. Ductile iron directly buried insulated pipes represent a novel type of heating pipeline designed for direct burial. In recent years, they have been developed and applied in several regions. Compared to traditional steel-based directly buried insulated pipes, these innovative solutions offer significant advantages such as superior corrosion resistance, extended service life, simplified installation, and enhanced cost-effectiveness. More importantly, in coal-mining subsidence areas and seismic fault zones, ductile iron directly buried insulated pipes can effectively withstand ground settlement-induced damage to the heating pipes, ensuring safe operation even during subsidence-related incidents. This technology holds great promise in filling the current gap in safely laying heating pipelines across China's coal-mining subsidence regions and seismic fault zones, providing an excellent solution for pipeline installation in these challenging environments.
The essence of ductile iron steel pipe is ductile iron pipe. It’s called this because ductile iron pipe combines the inherent properties of iron with the performance characteristics of steel. In ductile iron pipe, the graphite appears in a spherical shape. Typically, the graphite particles are about Levels 6 to 7. In terms of quality, the spheroidal graphite grade of the cast iron pipes is controlled between levels 1 and 3, with a spheroidization rate exceeding 80%. As a result, the material's inherent mechanical properties have been significantly improved, combining the natural characteristics of iron with the superior performance of steel. After annealing, the microstructure consists of ferrite along with a small amount of pearlite, giving these ductile iron pipes excellent mechanical properties—hence they are also commonly referred to as cast iron steel pipes.
The pre-furnace inspection of ductile iron is an indispensable step in its production process, directly influencing the quality of the final product. Accurately and promptly assessing the degree of spheroidal graphite formation in the molten iron allows for swift implementation of corrective measures, ensuring consistent quality control. Misjudgments made before casting can lead to significant scrap rates and wasted molding time. Therefore, timely and precise evaluation of the spheroidal graphite status at the furnace stage is far more critical than post-casting inspections.
